About the Museum

The Museum of Sex appropriately keeps some of the latest regular hours of any museum in the city. And while a visit makes for a fun date night, or Instagram-worthy girls' night out, it is an unexpectedly serious and academic museum and one of the few willing to examine major social and artistic movements that may be too complex for family-friendly galleries. Yes, they have a Bouncy Castle of Breats. But they also host serious exhibitions that take an honest look at the origins and progress of modern sexuality. Like any great museum, this is both fun and educational

What You Will See

The permanent installations examine the science and history of sexuality through objects, art, and diorama's of the natural world. It treats potentially-uncomfortable sexual topics as aspects of human culture just as revealing and worthy of study as the history of textiles or the origins of pottery techniques. Rotating exhibitions tend to have a local bent, with a particular eye on the impact of the sexual revolution of the 60s and 70s on the culture and economy of New York City and other urban areas. You may come to be entertained and excited, but you will leave educated and academically curious.

Why You Should Go

Consider this a children's museum for adults. Many installations are interactive and present fun topics in a comfortable and educational setting. There is as much more exploration of history, science, and art in the museum as there is giggle-inducing titillation. The balance the museum manages to strike between serious curation and entertainment is almost perfect.
