The Met's famed facade, nearly 120 years old, has long been considered incomplete. Four niches, two on either side of the grand entrance staircase. For the first time, these recesses house free-standing statues, as the facade's designer, Richard Morris Hunt, originally intended. Commissioned by the Met, Kenyan-American artist Wangechi Mutu sculpted and installed The Seated I,II,III,IV. This is the first of what will become, like the Rooftop commission, an annual event.
