About the Museum
The Bronx River Art Center (BRAC) is one of the most vibrant community-based art organizations in the city. 30 years ago, as part of an ongoing effort to revitalize the area surrounding the Bronx River, the Center was opened to educated and cultivate artistic creativity in a Bronx neighborhood overlooked in creative fields. BRAC is primarily an education center, offering classes for aspiring artists of all ages, but hosts a variety of events and exhibitions celebrating the diversity of contemporary art produced by residents of the Bronx.
What You Will See
BRAC is best visited during one of its many special exhibitions. Previous exhibitions have focused on contemporary art produced by new and established artists, though the gallery has occasionally curated shows examining social issues and the natural world. Artists showcased here, whether in solo or group shows, tend to crop up at other galleries and museums within a few years after debuting at BRAC. Exhibitions often feature site-specific installations created specifically for BRAC.
Why You Should Go
Now is the time to visit BRAC. After 7 years away from its original home, BRAC has returned to a newly renovated building with vast gallery spaces, comfortable classrooms, and a beautiful rooftop garden. The renovations have been well received by locals and critics alike and added new energy to an already-vibrant organization. Come for the newest exhibition or consider enrolling in one of the many classes. Watch the calendar for special events at one of the most active and influential neighborhood-cultural centers in the Bronx.
